Sandalwood: Sacred Wood and Iconic Fragrance in Perfumery
The floor of the temple is cool, the air is heavy with the smoke of burning wood. A monk dips his fingers into a light-colored sandalwood paste and draws a sign of blessing on the forehead of a visitor. For centuries, this paste has been extracted from the core of old sandalwood trees: It is rubbed onto stone slabs, mixed with water and processed into a fragrant mass that is still unmistakable today due to its gentle, creamy warmth.

The roots of the sacred wood
The typical sandalwood of perfumery originates from the white sandalwood tree (Santalum album), a small, evergreen tree from the Santalaceae family. It looks inconspicuous from the outside, but its slowly maturing heart gives off the warm, creamy fragrance that makes sandalwood so sought-after around the world.
